DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE SPONSORING
WEST VIRGINIA FARM PHOTO CONTEST

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) is sponsoring a photo contest to showcase agricultural products and the people who grow them. Winning entries will be displayed at the Gus R. Douglass Annex Building during the State Fair of West Virginia August 13-21, 2010.

The contest is open to all state residents and deadline for entries is June 30. An awards ceremony will be held during the State Fair, and winners in each category will receive a gift basket courtesy of Commissioner Gus R. Douglass.

The contest will be divided into student (K-12) and adult divisions. The adult division will be divided into five categories: Barns, crops (fruits, vegetables, flowers, gardens, apiary, etc.), animals (cattle, poultry, small livestock, cats and dogs in a farm setting, etc.), people (at work or play in a farm setting, etc.) and “women in agriculture” to highlight the roles of women in the agricultural field. West Virginia leads the nation in the percentage of family owned and operated farms. Women are operators on 29 percent of the state's farms.

Student division entries will be judged as a single, open category.

Entries must include the photographer’s name, address, phone number, division and category. Entries should also include a description of the photo, where in West Virginia it was taken and the approximate date it was taken.

Entries should be mailed to: WVDA Farm Photo Contest, 1900 Kanawha Blvd., E., Charleston, WV 25305-0170. They may also be e-mailed to Communications Manager Beth Southern at bsouthern@ag.state.wv.us. Please include entry information in the body of the e-mail and be sure resolution of digital images is of high quality (300 dpi) for reprinting purposes.

WVDA reserves the right to use any submitted photo for any purpose, with or without credit to the photographer. Submitted photos will not be returned, so entrants are encouraged to keep a duplicate copy.
For more information, contact the WVDA’s Communications Division at 304-558-3708.
