FREE CORN ROAST HIGHLIGHTS “EAT LOCAL CHALLENGE,”
NATIONAL FARMERS’ MARKET WEEK
A free corn roast will be held Wednesday, August 5, at the Capitol Complex from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in honor of the “West Virginia Eat Local Challenge” and National Farmers’ Market Week.
The roast will occur in conjunction with Capitol Market at the Capitol, a twice-weekly opportunity for Capitol Complex workers and visitors to pick up fresh, local fruits and vegetables on their lunch breaks.
August 2-8 is National Farmers’ Market Week, and Wednesday has been designated as West Virginia “Eat Local Day.” Gov. Joe Manchin and Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass are challenging state residents to eat one entirely locally-grown meal that day. More information is available at www.wvagriculture.org.
The day’s events are a collaborative effort among the state Departments of Agriculture, Natural Resources, Health and Human Resources, Education and Motor Vehicles.
The West Virginia Department of Agriculture protects plant, animal and human health through a variety of scientific, regulatory and consumer protection programs, as mandated by state law. The Commissioner of Agriculture is one of six statewide elected officials in West Virginia. Currently, Commissioner Gus R. Douglass is the longest-serving agriculture commissioner in the nation.
