MILLER NAMED ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER AT
STATE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass has announced the promotion of Director of Eastern Operations Steve B. Miller to assistant commissioner, effective January 1, 2010.
Miller graduated West Virginia University in 1977 with a degree in Agriculture and began his career at the West Virginia Department of Agriculture in 1981 (WVDA) as a dairy marketing specialist.
While he will continue his work with dairy, agribusiness and environmental issues, Miller will be taking on statewide responsibilities for special programs, such as composting and drought relief programs, among others.
A lifelong resident of Mineral County, Miller is the fourth generation to operate his family farm, a 189-acre beef cattle and hay operation. Steve and his wife, Sherrie, live in Fort Ashby and have four children, a three-year-old grandson and are expecting a granddaughter.
“I appreciate Commissioner Douglass’ confidence in my ability to do the job, and look forward to taking on additional responsibilities,” said Miller. “His leadership has been a great model for me to follow.”
The West Virginia Department of Agriculture protects plant, animal and human health through a variety of scientific, regulatory and consumer protection programs, as mandated by state law. The Commissioner of Agriculture is one of six statewide elected officials in West Virginia. Currently, Commissioner Gus R. Douglass is the longest-serving agriculture commissioner in the nation.
