STATE FARM MUSEUM LIGHT DISPLAY OFFERS GLIMPSE OF ‘CHRISTMAS PAST’

The West Virginia State Farm Museum near Point Pleasant once again is planning one of the largest displays of Christmas lights in the state. More than 2 million lights will grace the grounds this year. The display will run December 11-21 from 6-9 p.m. each night.

“A visit to see the Christmas lights is a tradition for many families in the area,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass. “The State Farm Museum grounds are also used throughout the year and provide an outstanding educational opportunity for anyone interested in our rich culture of days gone by. I encourage everyone to pay a visit.”

More than 10,000 visitors tour the Farm Museum grounds each Christmas season. In addition to the magnificent lights display, the Farm Museum’s Country Store and Country Kitchen will be open, children can have their photo taken with Santa, and chilly visitors can enjoy hot cocoa and cookies.

However, the real attraction is the lights.

“We’re always adding more lights,” said Farm Museum Executive Director Lloyd Akers. “We’ve decorated every tree, building and shrub, and last year, we even rolled some of the antique farm equipment out of the building and decorated it.”

The West Virginia State Farm Museum features an extensive collection of unusual antique farm equipment and implements. The grounds also contain numerous historical buildings – such as a church, schoolhouse and dentist office – that have been moved to the site for preservation. Nearly all of the buildings and artifacts have been donated by individuals, families or estates. The museum is a partnership between a private board of directors and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.

The Farm Museum is located four miles north of Point Pleasant on Fairgrounds Road, just off WV Route 62. It is open for regular tours April 1 - November 15, Tuesday - Saturday from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. It is closed Mondays and holidays.

A number of special events are held throughout the year. For more information about the Christmas display or any of the other events, visit www.wvfarmmuseum.org, or call 304-675-5737.

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture protects plant, animal and human health through a variety of scientific, regulatory and consumer protection programs, as mandated by state law.
