STATE FFA HAM, BACON AND EGG AUCTION SET FOR MARCH 10
The 65th State FFA Ham, Bacon and Egg Show and Sale will be held Monday, March 10, 2008, at 7 p.m. on the second floor of the State Training Center (Building 7) at the Capitol Complex.
The auction will feature the top 50 hams, 50 bacons and 10 dozens of eggs among those entered in the contest.
Last year’s contest sale set two national records for individual sales, and pushed the event’s total sales over the $1 million threshold. The sale was first observed in 1941, but some years were skipped during World War II.
Overall, the 2007 auction brought in $46,405 for FFA students, who typically use proceeds to fund a livestock project for the following year, or to help pay college expenses.
The highlight of last year’s sale came when Kim Riley of Cameron High School shattered the previous record for a dozen eggs after two enthusiastic bidders started a war for her Grand Champion dozen. When veteran volunteer auctioneer Al Thompson finally dropped the hammer, the winning bid stood at $10,000 – five times the previous record.
Phillip Dennison of Valley High School also set a new record when his eight-pound Grand Champion Bacon brought $800 a pound, for a $6,400 total.
Proxy bidding is available through the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) for interested buyers who would like to support FFA, but are unable to attend the event. Call WVDA Communications Division at 304-558-3708 for more information.
The West Virginia Department of Agriculture protects plant, animal and human health through a variety of scientific, regulatory and consumer protection programs, as mandated by state law. The Commissioner of Agriculture is one of six statewide elected officials in West Virginia. Currently, Commissioner Gus R. Douglass is the longest-serving agriculture commissioner in the nation.
