CAPITOL MARKET RETURNING TO STATE CAPITOL

“Capitol Market at the Capitol” will return to the grounds of the West Virginia State Capitol again this year, offering employees at the complex the opportunity to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables during their lunch breaks. The impromptu market will be open every Wednesday through September 5.

The kick-off event will be Wednesday, July 18, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and will include statements by First Lady Gayle Manchin and Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass. Events will also include a bee beard demonstration by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) apiary staff, a honey promotion and a cooking demonstration on grilling fresh fruits and vegetables.

The event has proven so popular that activities at the Capitol will be expanded to include “Fresh Fruit Fridays” each Friday in August.

The project is in its third year. It began as part of the First Lady’s Healthy Lifestyles Initiative and the WVDA’s ongoing efforts to promote farmers’ markets in West Virginia.

A number of other state agencies have assisted in the effort, including the Department of Health and Human Resources, Division of Natural Resources, Department of Administration, Division of Motor Vehicles, Department of Education, State Office of Public Defenders Services, and Capitol Market.

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture protects plant, animal and human health through a variety of scientific, regulatory and consumer protection programs, as mandated by state law. The Commissioner of Agriculture is one of six statewide elected officials in West Virginia. Currently, Commissioner Gus R. Douglass is the longest-serving agriculture commissioner in the nation.
