WHITE CHOCOLATE BAKING SQUARES UNDER RECALL
Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass is warning West Virginia consumers of a recall of Kraft Baker’s Premium White Chocolate Baking Squares that could be contaminated with salmonella bacteria. The product was distributed nationwide and consumers should discard any product they may have.
The affected packages have UPC Code 0043000252200 and for best-when-used-by dates: 31 MAR 2008 XCZ; 01 APR 2008 XCZ; 02 APR 2008 XCZ; and 03 APR 2008 XCZ, the company said late Wednesday.
This recall is only for Baker’s Premium White Chocolate Baking Squares (6 oz.); no other varieties of Baker's White Chocolate or any other Baker’s products sold in the United States are impacted by the recall.
The potential for contamination was noted after testing by the Food and Drug Administration detected the presence of Salmonella in some packages of the chocolate. The company said it is “aggressively investigating” the source of the problem.
Symptoms of foodborne illness caused by Salmonella include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. In people with poor underlying health or weakened immune systems, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections.
Consumers can contact the company at 1-800-310-3704 with any questions or to request reimbursement for purchased product.
