DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE HOSTING AGRICULTURE DAY AT POWER PARK

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) will sponsor “4-H, FFA and Agriculture Day at Power Park” Saturday, May 20, at West Virginia Power Park. Special events will start at 6:45 p.m. when select members of the West Virginia Power and the Greenville Drive square off for a cow milking contest. West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass will throw out the first pitch of the ball game at 7:05 p.m.

“I used to have a pretty good curve ball, but it’s been quite a while since I threw a baseball, so we’ll have to wait and see how that goes,” said Commissioner Douglass, now in his tenth term in office. “Food and agriculture are essential parts of summer events, and we appreciate the Power recognizing agriculture and allowing some of our agritourism attractions to reach out to the folks in the Kanawha Valley.”

Throughout the ball game, WVDA personnel will supervise games of “veggie twister” for the kids, and Power Park officials will conduct agriculture-related contests between innings.
Several informational exhibits on summer destinations will be set up along the concourse, including displays from the West Virginia Fairs and Festivals Association, State Fair of West Virginia and Mountain State Art and Craft Fair.

In addition, several 4-H and FFA groups from throughout the state are expected to be in attendance.

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture protects plant, animal and human health through a variety of scientific, regulatory and consumer protection programs, as mandated by state law. The Commissioner of Agriculture is one of six statewide elected officials in West Virginia. Currently, Commissioner Gus R. Douglass is the longest-serving agriculture commissioner in the nation.
