SMOKEY'S ON THE GORGE ANNOUNCES GOURMET FOOD LINE

Smokey's on the Gorge, a popular West Virginia tourist eatery located at Class VI River Runners, has announced that they will begin producing a line of gourmet food products for specialty food outlets, on-line sales, and national distribution. Eight gourmet products have been unveiled under the Smokey's brand.

Managing partner, Dave Arnold, explains, "Our restaurant has been looking to enter the gourmet food market for years. We've picked the favorites from our restaurant where the focus has been a departure from the usual and traditional Appalachian favorites. Our guests will remember their whitewater and dining experience while in West Virginia."

Created by Chefs Joe Re and Steve Eades, each product features the unique Smokey's on the Gorge label design and products created especially for gourmet dining. "Seedless Blackberry Preserves, Strawberry Rhubarb Preserves, Peach Preserves and No-Sugar Added Peach Preserves are popular items offered on our breakfast buffet while the Appalachian Dry Rub, Ramp Vinaigrette, Smokey's Famous Grilling Sauce and Hot Sauce can be found on our dinner buffet created for fun and variety with our whitewater guests," said Re. The Hot Sauce, named "Pure Screaming Hell" is named after a popular whitewater rapid on the Lower Gauley River.

Smokey's on the Gorge is the latest entry into the blossoming agritourism business in West Virginia. Smokey's on the Gorge and their new product line will join the West Virginia pavilion at the 51 st Annual National Association for the Specialty Food Trade Fancy Food Show in New York City this July. Agriculture Commissioner, Gus R. Douglass , is delighted to have Smokey's and Class VI join him in showcasing the best of West Virginia 's gourmet and agricultural businesses. "Dave and his company show a strong commitment to diversifying their tourism enterprise and joining the top-notch gourmet food manufacturers throughout the state. Their participation in the Fancy Food Show provides an opportunity to showcase the unique blending of their highly successful tourism enterprise, popular restaurant, and our agribusiness endeavors. We are excited they are joining us."

Originally created in 1986 and called Smokey's Charcoal Grill, it was named in honor of Dana "Smokey" Morton, bus driver extraordinaire, who came to Class VI River Runners in 1979 when they purchased a 1954 GMC bus from the old Oak Hill City Lines. Smokey passed away in 1988 yet the spirit of his legend lives on. Rafting guests of Class VI remember Smokey and his long handlebar mustache, warm smile, mischievous eyes and shaved head. He loved the whitewater rafting industry and great food...his spirit is bottled in each Smokey's on the Gorge product!
