NURSERY CROP INSURANCE DEADLINE NEARING

West Virginia nursery producers should note that the final date to apply for insurance on nursery stock is May 31, 2005 , according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency (USDA-RMA). Coverage will begin 30 days after receipt of applications.

"The premium subsidies have been increased significantly over the past few years," said Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass. "I think producers will find these programs much more attractive than in the past. They should at least look into crop insurance by contacting a local crop insurance agent."

The policies protect field-grown and containerized nursery plants against losses due to adverse weather, fire, irrigation failure, wildlife damage and delay in marketability that reduces value.

Although the crop insurance year runs from October 1 to September 30, premiums on new policies will be prorated according to when they begin. Applications accepted after May 31 will not begin coverage until October 1. For existing policies, coverage automatically attached October 1, 2004.

For a list of crop insurance agents in your area, contact your local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office or visit http://www3.rma.usda.gov/tools/agents.

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture protects plant, animal and human health through a variety of scientific, regulatory and consumer protection programs, as mandated by state law. The Commissioner of Agriculture is one of six statewide elected officials in West Virginia. Currently, Commissioner Gus R. Douglass is the longest-serving agriculture commissioner in the nation.
