GOVERNOR MANCHIN PROCLAIMS WEST VIRGINIA AGRICULTURE WEEK AT
AGRICULTURE AND CONSERVATION DAY AT THE LEGISLATURE

Governor Joe Manchin III joined Commissioner Douglass and agriculture and conservation representatives from throughout the state to kick off West Virginia Agriculture Week. Agriculture and Conservation Day at the Legislature coincided with the kickoff of National Agriculture Week, celebrated in Washington , D.C. , and across the country

The Department also unveiled new media kits and its new logo with the motto, "Providing an Umbrella of Protection."

"This is a message that became apparent as the Department has become more and more involved with agrosecurity and emergency response," said Commissioner Douglass.

"The Department has always had the mission of protecting human and animal health from disease. However, the events of September 11 and the discovery in 2003 of a BSE-positive cow really brought into focus how broad that responsibility is. An umbrella was the logical symbol and our Communications Division turned it into a reality."

A large crowd also enjoyed the traditional "Taste of West Virginia" reception provided by Marketing and Development Division following Governor Manchin's proclamation. The reception featured a wide variety of West Virginia produced products.

"The companies that make these products are West Virginia companies, and these receptions are a great way to make West Virginia consumers aware of the great products being made in our state," said Marketing and Development Director Jean Smith. "We'd love to work with the Governor's Office again on this type of project."

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture protects plant, animal and human health through a variety of scientific, regulatory and consumer protection programs, as mandated by state law. The Commissioner of Agriculture is one of six statewide elected officials in West Virginia. Currently, Commissioner Gus R. Douglass is the longest-serving agriculture commissioner in the nation.
