LOGAN FARMERS' MARKET HOSTING SPRING CELEBRATION

The Logan Farmers’ Market will host a spring grand opening Saturday, May 15, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. The Market is located just off Corridor G near Chapmanville and the event will feature helicopter rides, a mechanical bull, local music and a brand new season of farm-themed shopping.

West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass and Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin will speak at the opening.

“I am looking forward to a very big year at the Logan Market,” said Commissioner Douglass. “We’ve received word that the Department of Agriculture will again be receiving funding for the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) and I think that will help markets all over the state.”

Logan Farmers’ Market Manager Joy Vance said that the SFMNP draws customers to her facility from Mingo, Gilbert, Williamson and other nearby towns. She said that the Market has added a western-wear store and that a second produce store will open next week, a good development for customers.

“We’re continuing to grow. I think two produce distributors will help provide a better selection for our customers,’ she said. She also encouraged people to come out Saturday ready to shop. “This is not just another open house. I encourage everyone to come out and shop. We’ll have plenty of products on the shelves.”

Commissioner Douglass also noted that the number of farmers markets throughout the state continues to expand – 62 at last count – and that the state’s expanding agribusiness industry continues to drive demand for fresh, locally-grown produce.

“I don’t think enough attention is paid to the economic impact that agriculture has on our state. The dollars generated circulate through the community numerous times. Many of our agribusinesses are also popular tourist attractions, which means they bring new dollars in from out of state,” Commissioner Douglass said.

Market hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. year round. For more information, contact the Logan Farmers’ Market at 304/792-7017.
