SENIOR FARMERS MARKET NUTRITION PROGRAM
EXPANDED
The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program will be expanded
to cover all of West Virginia in 2004, West Virginia State Agriculture
Commissioner Gus R. Douglass announced Wednesday.
Thanks to funding provided by the United States Department
of Agriculture, we can now expand this program to all 55 counties
and provide West Virginia Grown fresh fruits and vegetables to more
than 35,000 seniors, Commissioner Douglass said. West
Virginia has the oldest population in the nation per capita, and
many of our seniors live on fixed incomes. For many of them, this
program provides them the ability to add healthy foods to their
diets.
Through the program, eligible seniors will receive $20 vouchers
(10, $2 coupons per household) to be used for the purchase of the
fruits and vegetables at any of the states farmers markets
or independent stands that have been approved for the program.
The West Virginia Department of Agriculture currently operates
markets in Charleston, Logan and Inwood. For a complete list of
the independent markets, click on this link: West
Virginia Farmer' Markets.
Interested persons should contact their local senior's center for
information on how to register for the program.
