ANNUAL FFA AUCTION SLATED FOR MONDAY
The 60th State Future Farmers of America (FFA) Ham, Bacon and Egg
Show and Sale will be held in the State Training Center in Building
7 of the Capitol Complex Monday, March 10, 2003, at 7 p.m. The event
should conclude at approximately 9:30 p.m.
We are the only state that has this type of activity, and
Im very proud of that, said Commissioner of Agriculture
Gus R. Douglass. This is one of my favorite events of the
year. It gives our young agricultural producers from across the
Mountain State the chance to show off the fruits of their talent
and hard work to very appreciative bidders.
Its all about the young farmers, who are the future
of agriculture in West Virginia, and its a tremendous opportunity
for young people to bring their products to market in the Charleston
atmosphere, said State FFA Advisor Don Michael. The
proceeds this auction generates for the students are often quite
sizable, and can provide money for college or the capital needed
to begin another agricultural project.
Michaels added that there should be some new faces among the buyers
that traditionally show up to support the FFA auction. A large
number of buyers keeps the excitement level high and it really pays
off for the students, he said.
The event is sponsored annually by the Governors Office,
the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and the West Virginia
Department of Education. Resource Marketing Inc., of West Hamlin
will again donate auctioneer services, and Commissioner Douglass
is expected to take a turn at the auctioneers microphone.
Numerous state-elected officials and area business leaders regularly
attend to bid on items produced by high school FFA students as their
annual projects. Up for sale will be the top 50 ham, top 50 bacon
and top 10 egg submissions, as determined by local contests and
a jury of agricultural experts from West Virginia University.
