PARKERSBURG, RIPLEY STOCKYARDS CLOSED PENDING FINANCIAL INVESTIGATION

West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass signed an order February 5, temporarily closing two of the state’s livestock markets, pending results of an administrative review. Jackson County Livestock Market in Fairplain and Parkersburg Livestock Market in Mineral Wells have been ordered to immediately cease all sales and activities until further notice.

“At this point, this is simply a suspension - not a revocation - of the permits issued to these facilities by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA),” said Commissioner Douglass. “Auditors from the Packers and Stockyards Administration (PSA) are currently going through the records of these companies to determine their financial status, and we expect to know more within the next few weeks.”

PSA, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), received the initial notice of financial problems from the owners of the markets and notified WVDA. Investigations in Parkersburg began the afternoon of February 3.

Commissioner Douglass will conduct a public hearing once the administrative review has been completed.
