AGRICULTURAL EXPORT SEMINARS SCHEDULED

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) announced Friday that two workshops will be held in the coming weeks that will help the state’s agribusinesses learn about foreign trade opportunities.

“The next step in marketing the Mountain State’s agribusinesses is to take them outside of the United States,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass. “The specialty food products made by these companies are tremendous ambassadors for West Virginia’s people, resources and workforce, and they provide the basis for ‘homegrown economic development’ that adds jobs to our economy and brings in out-of-state dollars.”

The first workshop will be held at the Flatwoods Days Inn February 26, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., and will feature representatives of the Canadian Embassy, Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) and Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). The focus of the workshop will be creating a comprehensive export marketing plan.

To register, e-mail or call WVDA Marketing Specialist Kelly Boles at kboles@ag.state.wv.us or 304/558-2210. The $10 registration fee includes lunch.

An additional workshop entitled “A Practical Guide to Export Preparation” will be held March 13, in room 116-118 of the Robert C. Byrd National Technology Transfer Center on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit College.

Facilitating this workshop will be Maria Velez de Berliner, president of Latin Trade Solutions, Inc. There is no fee for this workshop. To register, or for more information, call 888/645-9832.

Commissioner Douglass said agribusinesses add $100 million a year to the state’s economy and that the industry dovetails nicely with the state’s tourism efforts. “When people visit our state, they realize what a unique place West Virginia actually is. Our scenery is truly a feast for the eyes, and our agricultural products are a unique feast for the palates of visitors and locals alike,” he said.
