DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE WARNS OF CATTLE THEFT

Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass is warning cattle producers in the state to be on the lookout for cattle thieves following reports of missing cattle in the Eastern Panhandle.

“Cattle prices have reached record levels, and that may be tempting some individuals to take cattle that doesn’t belong to them,” said Commissioner Douglass. “Farmers should double-check all their gates to make sure they are locked.”

Farmers should also be on the lookout for unusual vehicles, and should report license plate numbers to local police if they spot suspicious activities. Sale managers should be alert for unfamiliar cattle sellers, Commissioner Douglass added.
