WVDA TO HELP SENIORS APPLY FOR NUTRITION PROGRAM
Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass announced that West
Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) Marketing and Development
Division personnel will be at the Beckley Farmers Market Wednesday,
September 11, from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. to assist eligible seniors
in signing up for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program
(WVSFMNP).
WVDA personnel will also be at the Upper Kanawha Valley Community
Center in Kimberly, W.Va., from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. the same day to assist
with sign-ups. Those who want to sign up for the vouchers must present
a photo ID and verifications of address.
Were very grateful the Program was funded in this years
USDA budget. said Commissioner Douglass. I know that
many seniors have expressed concerns that the Program would be cut,
we worked very closely with our counterparts in USDA to be sure
that would not happen.
The WVDA will receive $630,000 for the program this year, which
will allow approximately 30,000 seniors to be eligible to receive
$20 worth of vouchers each, said WVDA Director of Marketing and
Development Jean Smith.
The WVDA oversees the management of four markets located in Charleston,
Logan, Weston and Inwood and supports nearly two dozen independent
markets with its West Virginia Grown and other promotional programs.
