WVDA OFFERING JOHNE’S DISEASE SURVEILLANCE

The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) will soon begin offering free testing for Johne’s Disease on all West Virginia dairy farms and all certified and accredited beef herds.

Through a grant sponsored by USDA, the laboratory testing fee, normally $5 per animal, will be covered by the WVDA for up to 30 animals per farm for all eligible farmers until the available funds are exhausted. Cows must be in their third or higher lactation before they are eligible for participation in this program. Eligible farmers are being contacted by mail by the WVDA with additional details on the program.

Johne’s Disease (pronounced YO - nees) is a wasting disease that occurs in cattle, with a higher incidence in dairy animals. For more information, contact the WVDA’s Animal Health
Division, 304/558-2214.
