COMMISSIONER DOUGLASS WARNS HORSE OWNERS OF RESPIRATORY DISEASE
Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass has issued a warning
to horse owners to be on the lookout for equine rhinopneumonitis,
which has been reported in Virginia.
Symptoms of the respiratory form of the disease include nasal discharge,
cough and enlarged lymph glands. The neurological form of the disease
results in weakness and lack of coordination, particularly in the
rear limbs. Owners may be forced to euthanize animals with the neurological
form.
Horse owners should have their animals vaccinated against
this disease and should revaccinate every six months, said
Commissioner Douglass. This disease is spread by close contact
among animals, so owners should keep their horses away from others
of unknown health status.
Experts say the vaccine may not be as effective against the neurological
form as it is against the respiratory form, so general biosecurity
procedures and vigilant observation of animals are also highly recommended.
