WVDA PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO FLOOD AREAS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 20, 2001
CHARLESTON, WV The West Virginia Department of Agriculture has joined numerous other state agencies to provide relief for flood-devastated areas of the state, providing nearly 100,000 pounds of commodity foods to the states two food banks and 100 bales of hay for the Office of Emergency Services Animal Rescue Program at Twin Falls State Park, where 72 horses and a small number of cattle are being kept while owners try to put their lives and homes back in order.
"People fail to realize the role the Department plays in disaster situations like this. We recently took over the states Donated Foods Program, which distributes food to schools and in cases of emergency and were very impressed with the tremendous job theyre doing during this crisis," said Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass.
According to Donated Foods Director Myreeha Randolph, the agency has been distributing federally donated foods on a nearly daily basis during the past week. The commodities have principally been going to food banks, but some have gone to county boards of education, which are authorized to provide school food at "congregate feeding sites" during emergencies.
"We still have plenty of food," said Randolph. "We just need to know how much and where to go with it." Randolph added that anyone needing food for an individual household should call the nearest food bank, either at Huntington or Gassaway.
