FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE (FMD)

For Immediate Release March 28, 2001

MEDIA ALERT CHARLESTON, WV - On Thursday, March 29, at 9:30 a.m., a press conference will be conducted at the Operations Room of the West Virginia Office of Emergency Services. Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass and Cabinet Secretary for Military Affairs & Public Safety Joe Martin will discuss foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and its potential impact on West Virginia. Following the press conference, representatives from numerous state and federal agencies will meet to create a response plan should FMD spread to the United States.

"We’ve seen this disease spread rapidly across Europe," Commissioner Douglass said. "Although it’s not a threat to human health, I appreciate the quick action and willingness of Governor Bob Wise and his staff to create a plan to protect the livestock operations of West Virginia."

The Office of Emergency Services is located in the basement of the East Wing of the State Capitol. For more information, contact Bill Bissett, 304/558-3708.
