WAMPLER FOODS DONATES $30,000 TO HELP WEST VIRGINIA FARMERS WITH NEW LITTER TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM
CHARLESTON, W.VA. As part of an ongoing program that brings together a number of state and federal agencies, Wampler Foods, Inc. has donated $30,000 to a Litter Transportation Subsidy that is designed to allow farmers across the Mountain State to benefit from nutrient-rich poultry litter. On Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at 11 a.m., a press conference will occur at the Capitol Market where officials from Wampler Foods will present Agriculture Commissioner Gus R. Douglass and a representative for Governor Bob Wise with a $30,000 check for the program. The Capitol Market is located at 800 Smith Street, Charleston, West Virginia.
"This waste material is in great demand throughout West Virginia as a method for farmers to replace the nutrients needed for good crops," Commissioner Douglass said. "When properly applied, poultry litter provides agricultural land the needed jumpstart for a good growing season. We appreciate the support we've received from our poultry industry in donating funds to this worthwhile program and thank Wampler for their contribution."
Farmers who want more information about the Litter Transport Subsidy can contact 1-888-3 LITTER (1-888-354-8837). In order to be approved for the program, the applicant must have a nutrient management plan that is approved by WV Soil Conservation Agency or the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service. Without an approved nutrient management plan, no litter will be transported to the farmer. The initial registration period ends January 31, 2001.
The program officially began January 16, 2001, and has witnessed tremendous growth in a short period of time. "Several states are pursuing similar programs, and we're very pleased with the response from farmers thus far," said Lance Tabor, Executive Director of the West Virginia Soil Conservation Agency. "We've already had more than 50 farmers register for the program from various counties, including Kanawha and Putnam. It's a great opportunity."
The Litter Transport Subsidy was developed through a joint effort by the WV Department of Agriculture, U.S. Natural Resource Conservation Service, WV Soil Conservation Agency, Potomac Valley Soil Conservation District, Wampler Foods, Inc., and the Governor's Office.
