DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR WEST VIRGINIA DROUGHT ASSISTANCE

Charleston, W.Va. - As a result of the extensive damage from the 1999 drought, nurseries, Christmas tree farmers, produce growers and other similar agricultural operations, which can document a loss of 40 percent or more due to the drought, may apply for assistance through the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) until February 29, 2000.

Other examples of qualifying operations include greenhouses, orchards, aquaculture farms, beekeepers and other agricultural enterprises. This is not an emergency feed program. It is not intended for hay or pasture reimbursements.

For more information or to receive an application, contact the WVDA's Marketing and Development Division at 304/558-2210 or by e-mail at bwilliams@ag.state.wv.us.
